Willow Pond Construction Underway

Equinox was hired by the NC Arboretum to produce a master plan, design development documents, and construction documents for enhancing Willow Pond. The planning and design process included site analysis, public outreach, conceptual design, cost estimates, environmental permitting, construction documents, and construction observation.

The construction of Willow Pond at The North Carolina Arboretum is well underway! What was once an abandoned and eroded temporary stormwater detention pond will be a complex functioning system of three stormwater ponds meant to provide educational opportunities for Arboretum visitors, as well as suitable habitat for the rare mole salamander. Construction began this past summer with theĀ  formation of the pond and stormwater pipe system. During this past fall, erection of the boulder steps and boardwalk began. Local fauna have already begun to call the ponds home, with a bale of baby snapping turtles appearing this past October. A variety of native birds have also been seen visiting the area including an indigo bunting. Next spring, it is anticipated that an educational pavilion structure will be added and the ponds will be planted with native wetland plugs. We look forward to seeing the project completed next year.
