Willow Pond

Client: North Carolina Arboretum

Equinox developed a master plan for Willow Pond, a hidden feature of the North Carolina ArboretumThe master plan proposed a constructed wetland, which converts an old silted detention pond to a healthier, functioning wetland ecosystem. The planning process included site analysis, public outreach, conceptual design, cost estimates, and identification of environmental permitting needs.  The goals of the project are to improve habitat into an ecological hub for wildlife, create a serene and sensory-rich destination where aesthetics pay homage to Western North Carolina, create a gateway experience and easy foray into nature for those who have never before visited the Arboretum, North Carolina, or the natural world, and provide shelter and comfort so that visitors may use the site in all types of weather and be encouraged to stay to reflect upon the natural world.
