The NC Division of Parks and Recreation hired Equinox to prepare a Master Plan for Elk Knob State Park in Watauga and Ashe Counties. The plan prioritized resource conservation while providing varied recreation opportunities. The plan was crafted through engagement with, and dialogue between the NC State Parks Leadership Team, stakeholder groups, and the public. To understand the complexity of the park’s assets, and in-depth exploration included the evaluation of the Park’s site conditions, establishment of opportunities and constraints, context in the surrounding region, identification of relevant planning efforts and assessment of partnerships. This analysis resulted in an informed plan including the proposed recreational amenities, conservation/preservation opportunities, park expansion, phasing, and costs.
