The Master Plan for Smith Mill Works serves as a comprehensive plan to transform a 28-acre former greenhouse facility into a mixed use, resilient, environmentally responsible development that features a small business hub. It is envisioned as a dynamic and sustainable community center where creativity, industry, and nature intersect. Smith Mill Works hosts 16 sustainable businesses in 50,000 sq ft of space, located in West Asheville, near a community housing project in a traditionally lower-income area and adjacent to what will become Deaverview Mountain Park. The Master Plan triples the usable space through strategic reuse of existing infrastructure, engagement of outside developers, and smart growth initiatives. Equinox prepared a compressive master planning process that included assessing the feasibility of 120,000 sq ft of unused greenhouses, greenhouse renovation, site beautification, demolishing derelict buildings, planning a new community center, and resolving environmental issues. The plan also includes workforce housing. To vet the planning, Equinox also provided detailed grading and massing studies for the village center.
