Lauren Faye Welsh

Landscape Designer

Lauren is a Landscape Designer with an MLA degree from North Carolina State University. During her time there, she gravitated toward land conservation and climate-resilient design solutions. The relationship between people, ecology, and culture has been a consistent driving force that has compelled Lauren to develop creative solutions that create a deeper connection to the landscape.

Through her work with the Triangle Land Conservancy and the KIETS Climate Program, Lauren gained a deep understanding of the climate benefits of land conservation. This understanding, along with an appreciation and fascination for the interconnectedness of people, ecology, and place, informs her practice.

She was born and raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is dedicated to the conservation and thoughtful development of the region! When she isn’t at work, you can probably find her running or biking along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, or throwing pottery!

Why I love this work

When people ask me why I chose Landscape Architecture, I tell them that it feels like a really unique blend of all of my passions and interests. I love how tangible this work is. Molding and shaping spaces has real-time impacts on health and well-being in a way that motivates me. I have been moving through the creative process since I was a kid, and it’s special to witness how it continues to unfold and evolve in my work as a landscape designer. I love solving problems in a collaborative, iterative, and engaging way.

Favorite Species

I am a big fan of Ginkgo biloba because it’s the only species in the Ginkgo genus, making its ancient wisdom completely unique. There are a few Ginkgo biloba trees that I have had the pleasure of watching evolve through many, many seasons. I evolved right alongside them, gleaning wisdom and lessons from their golden foliage. I keep leaves pressed in almost every book that I own as a gentle reminder to trust the seasons of life. .
